Slate properties is an entrepreneurial Canadian private equity real estate and asset management company led by Brady and Blair Welsh. As long time friends and business associates of Craig Smith's Slate had originally engaged Ashlar Urban, Smycorp’s affiliate, as their exclusive property broker on three Toronto assets purchased by Slate and Blackstone Properties.  Ultimately, Ashlar ended up leasing 19 of their collective buildings in Toronto.

Aware of other properties Slate was pursuing, Smycorp saw investment potential in many of Slate’s underachieving properties in the form of retail plazas across the US. The opportunity to engage in acquisition, renovation, and/or leasing of these properties caused Smycorp to enter a limited partnership along with other notable investors in the Slate Properties Grocery Anchored Retail Fund (GAR 1) in 2011. Due to extensive knowledge and real estate experience Craig Smith, owner of Smycorp, was appointed to the GAR Investment advisory committee. Subsequently, these properties were sold into Slate Properties Rent (SRT) which currently trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Smycorp initially invested $1 million and over three years the total return on investment was 150%.
